Signs of Depression: How Jeff Got Back on Track
The moment 42-year-old Jeff* knew it had gone too far was the moment he stepped into the principal’s office and said, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ His depression and anxiety had become so severe, so overwhelming and all-encompassing that he had to say good-bye to his class, his “kids.”
Jeff, a teacher of students with different abilities and a personal trainer who often competed in triathlons, began sinking with signs of depression several years before. His coping mechanism, which became a form of addiction and even self-harm, was exercise.
Sometimes he would ride his bike for six hours straight.
That workout, that pain, brought temporary neurological relief and calm to his anxious feelings. But he’d been experiencing depression symptoms for nearly 10 years, and now it was eating away at him, leaving him so empty that he started looking in all the wrong places for something to fill him, even a little.
In his early forties, Jeff had been married for nearly 14 years, and began looking at outside relationships. He spent entire days on his bike or at the gym. He thought about taking his own life. He couldn’t show up for the work he loved. He felt a deep loss and shame at letting down the students who needed him. He’s tried everything: meds, doctors, counselling.
Everything was hopeless. And dark.
When someone is suffering from some of these debilitating signs of depression, they’ll typically experience:
- Substance Abuse – alcohol and/or drug abuse
- Addictions – gaming, excessive exercise, food, etc.
- Mood swings and irritability
- Loss of interest in relationships and activities
- Lack of energy; listlessness
- Lack of self-esteem
- Sadness and negativity
- Lack of motivation
- Poor sleep patterns, including insomnia
- Suicidal ideation
Unfortunately, for most people who suffer from depression symptoms, those feelings stay or get worse. Unless something changes.
At his tipping point, Jeff knew he needed help. He began looking for depression treatment programs. And he found us.
At Emergo Recovery, Jeff first experienced positive physiological relief as a result of the neuro-technology, the therapeutic diet, the balanced exercise, play, and the orthomolecular approach to healing—for his body and his brain. He got rest. He let his body heal. He unplugged from the stress and stimulation of his life at home.
He discovered an easy, unbridled kind of joy on games night, and the day we made snowmen.
“I never just have fun like this,” he said. “I get it now.”
Through our focus on brain health and brain health education, he realized positive emotional development. He began to understand the power of choice, the importance of balance, the reins to freedom and happiness. He was filling his tank—gaining self-confidence and motivation to embrace life.
The Emergo method is all-encompassing too. From brain-nurturing foods and family involvement to a range of therapeutic modalities and an approach that’s free of shame, we leave nothing to chance as we support you on your way to recovery and wellbeing. At Emergo we don’t use ‘steps.’ We use science.
Jeff is back home now. He’s back at work, back with his “kids.” His marriage is better than ever. On one of his last days with us he said to our therapeutic team, “You saved my life.”
We corrected him. “No, no. You saved your life.”
Jeff had got himself here. Jeff had done all the work to get better. We were just here to show him the way.
